 RYA Training

The RYA & PWP have carried out a great deal of work over the past year to promote the RYA PW training courses, which the PWP recommend all PW users attend. The requirement for completion of the RYA Training Course to be able to launch your PWC is becoming more and more widespread and this will only increase as the years go on. Many more PWC training establishments have now been set up, including a number of the authorised craft dealers.

Proper training is the key to successful PW riding. The RYA has been teaching people how to get afloat safely for over a century and a quarter. In that time, their courses and curriculum have travelled around the globe as models of consistency, quality and best practice. The RYA PW competency course is one day of instruction, designed to teach beginners and more experienced riders the essentials of safe, confident water use.

This includes PW control, essential equipment, launching and familiarisation, collision avoidance, orientation at sea, high and low speed handling, emergencies, weather, tides, essential safety information and courtesy to other water users.
Increasingly the RYA PW certificate is required for launching in UK harbours, but is also needed if you want to use your PW abroad.
All new PW's are sold with a £50-00 voucher towards the cost of this course and, once passed, you are issued with a certificate of competence.
Most courses take place over one day and can be taken either on a centres craft or your own.

If you want to use your PW outside the UK, you are likely to need certificates, often in the form of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC). You should also be aware of the local requirements for drivers, craft and licences wherever you go and, if possible, take with you a translation of your RYA PWC certificate.
